The stainless steel insert is permanently bonded into the polymer during manufacture for maximum service life. The TCP was designed from day one as an 11-round .45 ACP pistol and does not utilize a "plugged" 13-14 round magazine. Due to the specialized magazine design and the polymer construction, the TCP's grip is actually narrower than a standard 1911, even though it holds two more rounds of potent .45 ACP ammunition.
